DML Morning Briefing Tues. May 3

Major Supreme Court LEAK, Dems in uproar…

By  Team DML

Today is May 3 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room, in my opinion.

1 – Democrats condemn Supreme Court abortion draft, urge Congress to act
Fox News reports: Democrats urged Congress to pass a bill codifying Roe v. Wade in response to the alleged draft of a forthcoming Supreme Court opinion striking down the 1973 precedent on abortion.

The draft, which the Court refused to confirm or deny and which appears to date back to February, would reverse Roe v. Wade (1973) and allow the states to make their own laws on the hot-button issue of abortion. Since this is a draft, reported by Politico, and not an official signed opinion, Roe v. Wade remains the law of the land. Drafts circulate and change.

“If the report is accurate, the Supreme Court is poised to inflict the greatest restriction of rights in the past fifty years – not just on women but on all Americans,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said in a joint statement Monday.

“The Republican-appointed Justices’ reported votes to overturn Roe v. Wade would go down as an abomination, one of the worst and most damaging decisions in modern history,” Pelosi and Schumer added.

DML: Now, here’s the big question… Who leaked this?

2 – Protests erupt outside of Supreme Court after Roe v. Wade opinion leak
The New York Post reports: Pro-choice and anti-abortion protesters descended on the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. late Monday as tensions mounted following the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning the landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

The ruling was obtained by Politico in an extraordinary breach of the Supreme Court’s ironclad precedence of secrecy. If enacted, it would end a women’s constitutional right to an abortion, which has existed for nearly 50 years.

Minutes after the bombshell document was leaked, barricades were erected outside of the Supreme Court building in anticipation of protests, according to reports.

Within the hour, a growing crowd of abortion rights activists and a smaller group of counter-protesters clashed outside of the fences at the impromptu gathering.

DML: Here they go…

3 – Omar leads calls for court-packing after draft opinion in abortion case leaks
The Washington Examiner reports: Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is leading calls to expand the Supreme Court after a draft opinion leaked on Monday, signaling the high court would undo the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion case.

Omar is a frequent advocate of congressional legislation allowing for court-packing. Her latest call to expand the court of nine justices comes amid the revelation of a document authored by Justice Samuel Alito for the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, ruling that “the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives.”

“Overturning Roe would put the lives of women across the country at risk. It would fly in the face of decades of precedent and the overwhelming majority of public opinion. And they will not stop here. Expand the court,” Omar tweeted.

Omar added that “Congress must also abolish the filibuster and pass the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify Roe v. Wade into law.”

Rep. Rashida Tlaib also called to expand the court.

Black Lives Matter activist Cori Bush also blasted out, “Abolish the filibuster. Codify Roe. Expand the Supreme Court. Protect abortion rights by any means necessary. We need all of the above. This is an emergency.”

DML: It’s never been more important in our history for Republicans to take back the House and the Senate!

4 – Liberals Cheer On SCOTUS Leaker Who Shattered Court Norms As ‘Hero’
The Daily Caller reports: Several prominent liberals took to social media to praise the anonymous individual who leaked the Supreme Court’s reported draft opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Monday night, which appeared to show that the Court intends to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The unprecedented leak revealed that the majority of justices had reportedly agreed in a December vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, which protects abortion as a constitutional right, though the vote is not yet final and may still change, according to Politico. Some liberals praised the move as a heroic last-ditch effort to derail the Court’s decision.

“As we started discussing here, it is shocking both in substance and also shocking in terms of what it means about the court, and what it means about the stakes here that someone was willing to do this,” MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said late Monday. “It is just a remarkable thing.”

Some liberals saw the public outcry over the leak as a good thing, noting that it could put pressure on justices to reconsider their decisions.

DML: The leaker is NOT a hero! This is an effort to destroy the Supreme Court.

5 – Brazen thieves help themselves to merchandise in Dem-led city
Fox News reports: Video captured by a witness appears to show at least three masked thieves allegedly grabbing items off a shelf at a San Francisco-area Walgreens before running out of the store.

The 41-second clip has gone viral online. It has been viewed more than 1.6 million times on various social media platforms. The video begins with a woman in a pink jacket grabbing items off a shelf and putting them in a bag. Another woman near her also appears to be grabbing items off the shelf. The two women then go to other parts of the store to allegedly grab more items.

About 10 seconds in, the camera pans to show a baby in a stroller. The thieves appear to continue brazenly grabbing items off shelves as shoppers watch nearby. The two women run out of the store with large bags allegedly stuffed full of stolen goods. A man in a yellow hoodie runs out of the store behind them.

DML: Democrats have literally taken law and order and thrown it all away. Sickening!
