Today is July 4. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.
1.Akron police fire tear gas to quell rioters after black man, 27, was shot 60 times
DailyMail – Police in Akron, Ohio, unleashed a wave of tear gas on protesters who gathered outside of the city’s main courthouse on Sunday night.
Several hundred protesters marched in the city in the hours after the Akron Police Department released the bodycam footage showing the shooting death of 25-year-old Jayland Walker.
Walker was killed after being shot at least 60 times by Akron cops following a traffic stop on June 27.
Riot police used tear gas in response to a protester who was taking down barriers that were set up outside of the police headquarters. Authorities responded by coming out in ‘full riot gear,’ reports WKYC.
While fleeing the tear gas, protesters began driving their cars on the sidewalk to get around snowplows parked in the road to block off the high street – and some protesters launched smoke bombs in the streets, reports the Akron Beacon Journal.
DML: It’s always a riot, and it’s always sparked by the death of a criminal or someone evading police.
2.Chicago’s bloody holiday weekend continues: 54 people shot, 7 dead since Friday evening
Fox News – Violence in Chicago continues to escalate over the long July 4th weekend, with 54 people shot, 7 of them fatally.
The weekend kicked off with 22 people shot, four fatally, within the span of 20 hours on Friday. Violent encounters with police also popped up throughout the weekend, with Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown begging parents to take responsibility over their children.
DML: Where is Black Lives Matter marching in the streets? Why didn’t liberal gun policies stop this from happening? Questions you’ll never get answers to by the politicians or the media.
3.Squad member Ilhan Omar is BOOED at Somali music festival
DailyMail – Ilhan Omar smiled through a chorus of boos and jeers at a Somali music festival in her home state of Minnesota over Independence Day weekend.
The squad member made an appearance at a concert featuring Somali singer Soldaan Seraar at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Saturday night, but a viral video shows that much of the crowd was not happy to see her.
Some videos show people chanting ‘get out!’ at the congresswoman and telling her to ‘get the f*** out of here.’
DML: Parts of Minnesota look and feel like the third world, and she is the Queen of it all. But it doesn’t sound like the Queen is in favor these days. Maybe they vote her out, but probably is they won’t.
4.Pope Francis denies he is planning to resign soon
(Reuters) – Pope Francis has dismissed reports that he plans to resign in the near future, saying he is on track to visit Canada this month and hopes to be able to go to Moscow and Kyiv as soon as possible after that.
In an exclusive interview in his Vatican residence, Francis also denied rumours that he had cancer, joking that his doctors “didn’t tell me anything about it”, and for the first time gave details of the knee condition that has prevented him carrying out some duties.
DML: Shame. But then again they’ll replace him with another flaming liberal when he does retire so what’s the difference.
