DML Morning Briefing Oct 8
Today is October 8 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch.
1-Trump declares Pence the winner of debate
The president took to Twitter Wednesday night to declare his running mate and current vice president the winner of the debate.
Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Kamala Harris squared off in Utah for 90-minutes answering a wide range of questions about COVID19, the economic recovery, climate change, and healthcare. Although the contest was mostly cordial, it did get heated a few times when Pence pressed Harris on her time spent as the attorney general of California.
Trump wrote on Twitter: “Mike Pence WON BIG”
He also tweeted a chart showing Harris’ track record of incarcerating blacks at a higher rate than normal.
DML: Trump is correct, Pence did win.
2-Second Trump-Biden debate will be virtual, organizers say
The second debate between President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden will be virtual, with both candidates appearing from separate remote locations, the Commission on Presidential Debates announced Thursday — nearly a week after Trump announced he’d tested positive for the coronavirus.
The debate, scheduled for Oct. 15, “will take the form of a town meeting,” organizers said.
Trump’s announcement of his positive COVID-19 test had thrown the status of all future 2020 debates in doubt. The debate between Vice President Mike Pence and California Sen. Kamala Harris went on as planned Wednesday night with on-stage dividers between the candidates after both had tested negative for the coronavirus.
DML: This is not something that helps Trump, at all. Trump is a much better debater when on stage than he is a speaker from a virtual setting.
3-AOC to VP Pence: ‘It’s Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez to you’
U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared to be closely watching the vice presidential debate Wednesday night, tweeting several responses to comments by Vice President Mike Pence during his confrontation against Sen. Kamala Harris.
Particularly irking the New York Democrat seemed to be Pence’s reference to her by her widely used nickname “AOC.”
“For the record @Mike_Pence, it’s Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez to you,” Ocasio-Cortez responded on Twitter.
DML: Hey, I think she should be happy. They were talking about her bill to combat farting cows and airplanes. He could have referred to AOC as that “dumb b*tch from New York,” but he was more professional.
3-Undecided voters found Harris ‘abrasive, condescending’ in vice presidential debate: Frank Luntz
Voters found Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris to be “abrasive and condescending” at various points throughout Wednesday’s debate with Vice President Mike Pence, pollster Frank Luntz told the Fox News reaction panel.
“The complaint about Kamala Harris was that she was abrasive and condescending,” said Luntz, who monitored the reactions of 15 undecided voters from eight battleground states throughout the evening.
“The complaint about Mike Pence was that he was too tired, but [he was] vice presidential, or presidential,” added Luntz, who went on to say that “if this is a battle over style and substance — which is often the case with undecided voters because they simply do not choose on policy, they also choose on persona — this was Mike Pence’s night.”
Luntz said that while voters were frustrated with the vice president for repeatedly running over his allotted time, “Harris’ reactions to Pence — the smiling, the smirking, the scowling” left them far “angrier” with her performance.
DML: This is no shock to me. People aren’t dumb, they know an angry woman when they see it. This semi-black lady is off the rails pissed off.
4-Silicon Valley reportedly pouring money into Biden coffer — not so much for Trump
Employees at the six largest Silicon Valley tech firms have donated nearly $5 million to Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden while dishing out a paltry $239,000 to President Trump, according to a report on Tuesday.
Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Oracle employees have contributed $4,787,752 to the former vice president and just $239,527 to Trump since 2019, Wired reported after examining data from the Federal Election Commission.
DML: I know you’re shocked (lol). My only prayer is the people who gave $239,000 to Trump are the ones who monitor my accounts going forward. Wishful thinking, I know.
5-Jewish reporter attacked and called ‘Nazi’ after Orthodox protest turns violent, video shows
An Orthodox reporter said he was attacked by an angry mob at a protest in Borough Park, Brooklyn, against coronavirus restrictions Wednesday night.
The reporter, Jacob Kornbluh, said protesters yelled that he was a “Nazi” and “Hitler” as they chased after him during a second night of unrest over government attempts to stop the surging cases of COVID-19 across a broad swath of Brooklyn.
“I was just brutally assaulted, hit in the head, and kicked at by an angry crowd of hundreds of community members of the Boro Park protest — while yelling at me “Nazi” and “Hitler” —after Heshy Tischler recognized me and ordered the crowd to chase me down the street,” Kornbluh tweeted.
DML: Ultimately, these people are pissed off about the restrictions on practicing their faith, and I cannot blame them. Shutdowns and lockdowns, just like masks and social distancing do not work. Why would any person (Cuomo) try to impose the same methods to combat COVID19 that didn’t work the first time. What’s Cuomo going to do next, force sick people into nursing homes?
