DML Morning Briefing Tues. Mar. 16: Border crisis coming to a town near you… or your own

By  Team DML

Today is March 16 and I am Dennis Michael Lynch. Below are my opinions on the stories grabbing headlines this morning.

1 – Border Patrol warns GOP lawmakers: People on terror watch list are mingled in with migrants in border surge
The Washington Times reports: People on the terrorist watch list have been nabbed trying to cross the border as part of the new surge of migrants, congressional Republicans revealed during a trip to the border Monday.

They said agents reported having caught migrants from Yemen, Iran and Sri Lanka, amid the much larger numbers of Haitians, Central Americans and others.

“Individuals that they have on the watch list for terrorism are now starting to exploit the southern border,” Rep. John Katko of New York, the top Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, said as he stood near a section of border wall in El Paso, Texas.

He was part of a delegation of House Republicans, led by Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, that was visiting to take stock of the migrant surge and to pressure President Biden for a change in course. McCarthy also shared the same report:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said in a Fox News interview Sunday morning that, in the Rio Grande Valley sector alone, the following have been apprehended:

  • 110,000 total illegal aliens apprehended in RGV since Jan 1
  • 800 criminal aliens
  •   62 gang members
  •   78 sex offenders

According to the latest Border Patrol report, for the month of February, out of the 100,441 total apprehensions, the migrants come from the following countries:

  • 44,099 – Mexico
  • 19,917 – Honduras
  • 19,006 – Guatemala
  •   5,514 – El Salvador
  • 11,905 – Other

DML: Meet your new neighbors.

2 – City officials furious as Biden administration buses illegal aliens into their local communities
Overwhelmed with the number of illegal alien unaccompanied minors streaming across the border, the Biden administration has run out of places to put them, and are busing them further into the country to be housed in facilities around the country.

According to the latest Border Patrol report, for the month of February, out of the 9,457 total unaccompanied single minors apprehended, they come from the following countries:

  • 1,889 – Mexico
  • 2,575 – Honduras
  • 3,929 – Guatemala
  •    770 – El Salvador
  •    294 – Other

MIDLAND, TX: Under the cover of darkness Sunday night, DHS brought in several bus loads of unaccompanied illegal alien minors to be housed at a holding facility in Midland, Texas, and local officials are hopping mad, saying they had no warning, no time to prepare, and weren’t even asked whether they would take them.

The minors being brought in to Midland are reportedly all boys ranging in age from 13 to 17. Town officials have been told about 700 teens will be housed there, and they have no idea how long it will last.

DALLAS, TX: DHS plans to house up to 3,000 illegal alien teen boys, ages 15-17, at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center for up to 90 days beginning as early as this week, according to a memo sent Monday to members of the Dallas City Council. The site will be used as a “decompression center.”

GILA BEND, AZ: The mayor of Gila Bend, Arizona, Chris Riggs, said on Monday he is very concerned as news broke of a potentially large influx of illegal immigrants heading for his community.

“We can barely afford to take care of the people that we have here and our community now, and as of this second, the Border Patrol advised us that they’re going to drop people off here and do sort of like: ‘They’re your problem’,” said Riggs.

“We just do not have the ability to care for these people. Quite frankly, it’s going to cost us tens of thousands of dollars a year to be able to just to provide them with a bottle of water and a sandwich when they get dropped off.”

DML: Take them to all Washington, D.C.!

3 – Dick Durbin: Biden’s Amnesty Plan for Illegal Aliens ‘Doesn’t Have Support’
Breitbart reports: Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) said there is not enough support in Congress to pass President Joe Biden’s amnesty plan for millions of illegal aliens.

Last month, House and Senate Democrats introduced the Biden plan — known as H.R. 1177 & S. 348 — which would give amnesty to the roughly 11 to 22 million illegal aliens living in the United States while doubling annual legal immigration to the country, flooding the labor market with more foreign competition for the nation’s nearly 17 million jobless Americans.

During an interview with CNN on Monday, Durbin said passing Biden’s amnesty through Congress is unlikely at the moment.

“I don’t see a means for reaching that,” Durbin told CNN when asked about the amnesty. “I want it. I think we are much more likely to deal with discreet elements.”

DML:  “Discreet elements.”  Pay attention to that.

4 – Biden planning largest tax hike in decades to finance spending
Fox Business reports: President Biden is reportedly planning to include the first major tax hike in close to 30 years in the next economic spending bill set to follow his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package.

The next spending initiative — which is expected to be even bigger, costing as much as $4 trillion — won’t rely on just government debt as a funding source and could include an increase in both the corporate tax rate and the individual rate for high-income earners, according to Bloomberg News, citing a person familiar with the matter.

The planned changes include: raising the corporate tax rate to 28% from 21%, raising the income tax rate on individuals earning more than $400,000, expanding the estate tax, creating a higher capital-gains tax rate for individuals earning at least $1 million annually and paring back tax preferences for so-called pass-through businesses.

Biden vowed to raise taxes on the “super wealthy and big corporations” during his 2020 presidential campaign:

DML: I’ll talk about this on my podcast this morning!

5 – Schools weighing whether to seat students closer together
The Associated Press reports: U.S. guidelines that say students should be kept 6 feet apart in schools are receiving new scrutiny from federal health experts, state governments and education officials working to return as many children as possible to the classroom.

Even as more teachers receive vaccinations, the distancing guidelines have remained a major hurdle for schools as they aim to open with limited space. But amid new evidence that it may be safe to seat students closer together, states including Illinois and Massachusetts are allowing 3 feet of distance, and others including Oregon are considering it.

Debate around the issue flared last week when a new study suggested that, if masks are worn, students can be seated as close as 3 feet apart with no increased risk to them or teachers. Published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, it looked at schools in Massachusetts, which has backed the 3-feet guideline for months.

Asked about it Monday, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the agency is now exploring whether children can be seated closer together than was previously recommended. The 6-feet spacing guideline is “among the biggest challenges” schools have faced in reopening, she said.

DML: 6 feet… 3 feet… it’s all a big guessing game, at the expense of our kids!
