DML Morning Briefing ~ Wed. Oct. 12

Today is October 12. Below are some of the stories grabbing headlines this morning. I hope you share this briefing as doing so will make you the smartest person in the room.

1 – Biden addresses possible criminal charges against Hunter Biden, says he’s ‘proud’ of him
Fox News reports: President Biden said Hunter Biden is “on the straight and narrow” and that he is “proud of” him despite recent criminal allegations against his son, including tax fraud and lying to purchase a gun.

During an interview with CNN host Jake Tapper on Tuesday, the president defended his son as the 52-year-old potentially faces tax and false statements charges from David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney for Delaware.

“I’m proud of my son,” the president told Tapper. “This is a kid who got, not a kid — he’s a grown man. He got hooked on — like many families have had happen, hooked on drugs. He’s overcome that. He’s established a new life.”

Tapper specifically asked Biden to respond to a recent report that claims the FBI believes there is enough evidence to charge Hunter with tax fraud as well as denying his drug use on a gun-purchase form.

MY TAKE: This is so embarrassing.  All of it.

2 – Wholesale prices rose 0.4% in September, more than expected as inflation persists
CNBC reports: Wholesale prices rose more than expected in September despite Federal Reserve efforts to control inflation, according to a report Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The producer price index, a measure of prices that U.S. businesses get for the goods and services they produce, increased 0.4% for the month, compared to the Dow Jones estimate for a 0.2% gain. On a 12-month basis, PPI rose 8.5%, which was a slight deceleration from the 8.7% in August.

Excluding food, energy and trade services, the index increased 0.4% for the month and 5.6% from a year ago, the latter matching the August increase; excluding just food and energy, PPI was flat.

Inflation has been the economy’s biggest issue over the past year as the cost of living is running near its highest level in more than 40 years. The Fed has responded by raising rates five times this year for a total of 3 percentage points and is widely expected to implement a fourth consecutive 0.75 percentage point increase when it meets again in three weeks.

3 – Bronx man who smashed up Manhattan McDonald’s with ax is busted again
The New York Post reports: The man who went on an ax-wielding rampage at a Manhattan McDonald’s has been busted again — this time for allegedly spraying-painting graffiti in Brooklyn and then swiping a pricey bike to try to flee cops.

Michael Palacios — who was caught on video smashing up the crowded fast-food joint on the Lower East Side during a beef with other patrons in September — was approached by police around 5:40 p.m. Sunday after he was seen spraying graffiti behind 69 Second Ave. in Gowanus, according to police sources.

The 31-year-old messenger ran and snatched a bicycle from in front of a coffee shop and tried to ride off before he was detained, sources said.

The blue bike, valued at $3,500, was damaged in the chase, sources said. Palacios of Manhattan was found in possession of graffiti paraphernalia at the time, according to sources. While he was in custody, police also blamed Palacios for a graffiti incident in June at the Broad Channel subway station in Queens, sources said.

4 – ‘They Messed with the Wrong Georgian’: Herschel Walker Raises Record $350K in One Day
Breitbart reports: Georgia’s Republican U.S. Senate nominee Herschel Walker raised a record approximately $350,000 on Tuesday, campaign sources familiar with the matter told Breitbart News.

“Raphael Warnock and the left wing crazies will say and do anything to hold onto power. Well, they messed with the wrong Georgian,” a Walker campaign source said on Tuesday night. “He’ll never back down because the stakes are too high. And conservatives across the country see what the left is trying to do, and they are fueling his campaign with the resources we need to fight and win this seat back for Georgia.”

Walker, a retired NFL star running back, has faced a tough past week on the campaign trail after establishment media outlets leveled him with brutal attacks from an anonymous woman alleging that he paid for an abortion she had more than a decade ago — charges he denies. Walker’s team has seen a surge in fundraising since then, and in national support.

Things keep getting better for Walker this week, though, as in addition to the record fundraising day, Walker saw a pair of polls — one from Emerson and one from Trafalgar — that both showed him in a virtual tie with incumbent Democrat Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA).

5 – Study: Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Effectiveness Turns Negative Within Month
The Epoch Times reports: The effectiveness of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine against infection turns negative over time, according to a new study that was funded by the vaccine maker.

The effectiveness of three doses—a primary series and a booster—against infection remained above 50 percent after 150 days against BA.1, a subvariant of the Omicron virus variant, researchers estimated.

However, against more recent strains, including the currently dominant BA.5, the effectiveness turned negative. Against BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5, the effectiveness went negative after 150 days; against BA.1.12.1, the effectiveness turned negative after 91 days.

Negative effectiveness means that a vaccinated person is more likely to contract COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, than an unvaccinated person.

Researchers with Moderna and Kaiser Permanente, which carried out the study, also found that people who received three Moderna doses were more likely to become infected when compared to people who received just two doses.
